Norma was born in Hebbronville, Texas and grew up in Edinburg where her family moved in 1970 and has been a member of El Buen Pastor UMC ever since.  She has a wonderful heritage in ministry.  Her grandfather was a local pastor in the Rio Grande Conference, her mother has served faithfully in music ministry all of her life, and her brother is actively involved in ministry as well.  In 1977, Norma attended Youth Camp in Sacramento New Mexico, where she first felt her calling into ministry.  Norma graduated from Edinburg High School and attended Pan American University from 1981-1985 where she majored in communications.  Like many young adults, she was M.I.A. until her return in 1994, which has given her the passion for reaching young adults before they become missing-in-action.

Since 1994, she has enjoyed many years in service as a lay person at El Buen Pastor.  She has worked with Children, Youth, Young Adults, Faith in Action, Prayer, and Caring Ministries.  She has been a member of the Council of Ministries, Administrative Board, and worked one year as the church secretary.  Norma has taken, and facilitated, Disciple Bible Studies,  attended various Schools of Mission, Lay Speaking Trainings, and was commissioned as a Lay Preacher in 2005.  She was licensed as a Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church in 2007 and serves as Executive Associate Pastor and Young Adult's Pastor.

Norma is married to Bill Pollard and together have two daughters, Sarah and Hannah, who are their answers to prayer.   The fifth member of the Pollard household is their black & tan cocker spaniel, Button, who has the most awesome lion paws!

Nurturing Ministry

Emmy Cerda

Greetings,

I want to extend a warm welcome to you and your family and thank you for allowing us to minister to you.   My name is Emmy Cerda and I have been the Discipling Coordinator for El Buen Pastor UMC in Edinburg, TX for approximately the past 4 1/2 years.   My family (husband, teenage son and daughter) and I have been at EBP for the past 6 years.  We were blessed to become part of EBP and to be embraced wholeheartedly by God’s people here as you will be too.

EBP’s Discipling Ministries is about offering opportunities for you and your family to grow in your relationship and walk with Christ.  Matthew 28: 19 says, “Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘Therefore, GO and MAKE DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  TEACH these NEW DISCIPLES to obey all the commands I have given you.’"  The “disciples” in this verse are you and me.  To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to be a learner or a pupil and to sit at His feet and get to know Him.

At EBP we do this through Bible based classes on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights throughout the year, Fall and/or Spring Confirmation of Faith classes, Vacation Bible School during the summer, and seasonal Bible studies such as Advent and Lent.   We welcome the opportunity to nurture, encourage and support you and your family on your spiritual journey.  Come join us!

If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to call or text me at 956-400-1200.  We welcome and value your comments and suggestions.

Outreach Ministry

Norma Perez

It was the summer of 2005; all three of our children were going to camp up in Sacramento.  My husband Jaime and I were asked to be helpers.  When we got to camp it was an awesome feeling to be up the mountain.  I had heard so many amazing stories of many who had gone before. God’s presence was felt everywhere. We were given a duty of walking around with flashlights to keep an eye on the kids. All around me I could hear the kids catching up with each other.  The first evening that we had praise and worship I started hearing my name called.  I would respond “here I am”.  I thought that the kids or the adults we were with were calling me.  It happened many times that night and many, many more throughout that week.  I realized that God was calling my name.   I had heard him calling me before but I always ignored the call, I didn’t think I was a good Christian and thought  that I would be judged by others if I stepped up to answer the call.  I shared with my husband what was happening and he hugged me and encouraged me to do something about it.  I felt scared, I wanted to answer the call but I didn’t know how.  After a week at camp my life changed. God had a plan. I was called to serve and have served in many different positions:  Member of the United Methodist Women, Trustee Secretary, Member of the Counting Team, Choir, and Prayer room coordinator, iPray Network, Stephen Minister and Coordinator for Ministry with the poor.

Small Blessings thrift store is part of Ministry with the poor and we take donations from members of our congregation and the community.  It is run by volunteers and we are open most mornings.  I take kids shopping for back to school socks and underwear with the proceeds of Small Blessings.

We have had a coat and blanket drive and given coats and blankets to San Carlos Elementary,

We have held a community breakfast, the third Saturday of the month and feed those who are in need.

I teach a crocheting class and we have made crochet hats, booties, and shawls, everything we make we donate to a local organization.  We have donated to the Rainbow Room, Edinburg Children’s Hospital. Mujeres Unidas, La Retama Manor nursing home and Vannie Cook Cancer Center.

I continue to grow in God’s word through study and prayer. I have a wonderful support with my husband and church family.  I pray that I continue to meet the needs of those in need.

The Lord continues to call my name.  I know he has a plan.

If you would like more information on how you can volunteer at Small Blessings please contact me at 956-929-9647.
