Outreach Ministry

Norma Perez

It was the summer of 2005; all three of our children were going to camp up in Sacramento.  My husband Jaime and I were asked to be helpers.  When we got to camp it was an awesome feeling to be up the mountain.  I had heard so many amazing stories of many who had gone before. God’s presence was felt everywhere. We were given a duty of walking around with flashlights to keep an eye on the kids. All around me I could hear the kids catching up with each other.  The first evening that we had praise and worship I started hearing my name called.  I would respond “here I am”.  I thought that the kids or the adults we were with were calling me.  It happened many times that night and many, many more throughout that week.  I realized that God was calling my name.   I had heard him calling me before but I always ignored the call, I didn’t think I was a good Christian and thought  that I would be judged by others if I stepped up to answer the call.  I shared with my husband what was happening and he hugged me and encouraged me to do something about it.  I felt scared, I wanted to answer the call but I didn’t know how.  After a week at camp my life changed. God had a plan. I was called to serve and have served in many different positions:  Member of the United Methodist Women, Trustee Secretary, Member of the Counting Team, Choir, and Prayer room coordinator, iPray Network, Stephen Minister and Coordinator for Ministry with the poor.

Small Blessings thrift store is part of Ministry with the poor and we take donations from members of our congregation and the community.  It is run by volunteers and we are open most mornings.  I take kids shopping for back to school socks and underwear with the proceeds of Small Blessings.

We have had a coat and blanket drive and given coats and blankets to San Carlos Elementary,

We have held a community breakfast, the third Saturday of the month and feed those who are in need.

I teach a crocheting class and we have made crochet hats, booties, and shawls, everything we make we donate to a local organization.  We have donated to the Rainbow Room, Edinburg Children’s Hospital. Mujeres Unidas, La Retama Manor nursing home and Vannie Cook Cancer Center.

I continue to grow in God’s word through study and prayer. I have a wonderful support with my husband and church family.  I pray that I continue to meet the needs of those in need.

The Lord continues to call my name.  I know he has a plan.

If you would like more information on how you can volunteer at Small Blessings please contact me at 956-929-9647.
